I arrived in Nepal February 10th, 2005, Tibetan New Year Day and ten days after the King of Nepal's declaration of Emergency. Flights in and out of the country had been suspended, phone lines cut, dissidents arrested, Parliament dissolved, and the press shut down. By February 10th, Kathmandu was trying to get back to normal as restrictions from the declaration began to be lifted.
In September 2004, I was sent on assignment by Saudi Aramco World magazine to climb Mount Ararat, on the Iranian-Turkish border in eastern Turkey to portray recreational mountain climbing on Ararat. After completing the assignment, I travelled north to Kars and to the ruined city of Ani, the ancient capital of Armenia, on the Armenian-Turkish border, and on to Kaçkar Daglari on the Georgian-Turkish border to make my own images.
In 2004, my family and I had the opportunity to house sit at a friend's 17th century large villa a few miles outside of the Tuscan city of Siena, Italy. What really caught my eye were the rolled bales of hay that dotted the Tuscan countryside. From our friend's house we watched the hay around us ripen into a golden brown and then get cut and rolled into bales. Then it was as if the rolled bales of hay were placed over the landscape like a large outdoor art installation. All I needed to do was go outside and walk over the brittle stubble to document the handiwork of nature and the local farmers.
These images are from the northern Syrian city of Aleppo, the Basilica of San Simeon, the Dead Cities, Apamea, and Palmyra, the ancient Roman trade city on the trade route to Mesopotamia.
"...certainly very beautiful, but they manage, nonetheless, to retain their revelatory power. Technically flawless, esthetically satisfying, and emotionally honest..." - Aperture Foundation's "Director's Cut"
This selection of images was taken in the Burren region of Ireland in the spring of 2003. John O'Donohue invited me on to help out with his Western Ireland tour.
Images from Vermont, New York on the one year anniversary of September 11, and protests in New York and Washington in 2002 and 2003.
