In September 2004, I was sent on assignment by Saudi Aramco World magazine to climb Mount Ararat, on the Iranian-Turkish border in eastern Turkey. The assignment was to portray recreational mountain climbing on Ararat, a mountain with a complicated history dating back to the biblical story of Noah's Ark. After completing the Ararat assignment, I travelled north to Kars and to the ruined city of Ani, the ancient capital of Armenia, on the Armenian-Turkish border, and on to Kaçkar Daglari on the Georgian-Turkish border to make my own images.
